[snippet from a private conversation]

I think Bacon invented tagging.

He called it “Ye Olde Fyfteme for the Identification & Categorifation or Detailef Bothe Triviale & uf Greate Concerne Using Labelef Compofed uf Wordf Individuallie & inne fmall Groupes Expreffing Meaninge & Relationfhipf Thuf Beinge fifted tew Difplay chofen Meaninge & Relationfhips tew the Readere.”

Interestingly enough, he had a tagging system (similar to Aristotle’s classifications of all worldly things) which consisted of the following tags:

  • Thingf thate belonge tew the Queen
  • People I hav flept withe
  • Things thate thate baftard fhakefpeare wrote (an empty category!)
  • Thingf thate are yello lik the Jaundife
  • Thingf thate tafte lik the potato
  • Things I hav flept upon
  • Puftules, boilf, goiterf & other growthf
